説明 | Introduced, cool-season, annual, erect plant to 1 m tall. Leaves are spiny and form a rosette when young. Rigid, ribbed stems are covered with minute hairs. Flowerheads are solitary terminal heads; heads have tubular yellow florets surrounded by stiff, spiny, leaf-like hairy bracts. Germinates mostly in autumn; plant is in rosette form over winter; flower stem elongates in spring; flowers in early summer. A native of Europe, it is occurs on bare or disturbed soils. An important weed of cultivated or cropping country. It is a contaminant of grain and hay. Smaller rosettes may be grazed by stock but are avoided once they become larger; heavy grazing encourages growth. Seed rarely germinates if buried below 5 cm; ploughing to bury seed can be useful. Mowing or slashing prior to flowering can be useful if it reduces seed set. Responds negatively to increased fertility. Boom or spray graze to control. These plants were growing in Queanbeyan Nature Reserve. |
