説明 | Introduced, cool season, annual, erect herb 20–80 cm tall. Leaves are usually > 40 in number, hollow, terete, 3–55 cm long and to 8 mm wide. Flowerheads are panicles to 40 cm long and 5–30-flowered. Flowers have 6 tepals 5–11 mm long, white or sometimes pale pink with a red-brown central stripe. Fruit are rounded capsules 4–6 mm long and pale red-brown to sandy-brown. Flowering is mostly in winter and spring. A native of southern Europe and east to India, it grows in a wide range of habitats, especially open sites. It is particularly abundant in disturbed sites, along roadsides and in overgrazed rangelands but also grows in a wide range of native habitats. It is a declared noxious weeds in many areas. It is not eaten by livestock and can lead to a significant decrease in carrying capacity. |
