説明 | Fresco from Pompeii representing a Priapus/Mercury caricature. Now in the Secret Room, National Archaeological Museum, Naples. In Greek mythology, Priapus was a minor rustic fertility god, protector of livestock, fruit plants, gardens and male genitalia. He was best noted for his huge, permanently erect penis, which gave rise to the medical term priapism.Hermes (Roman Mercury) is depicted here as a fertility god with an oversized phallus. He has a thick beard, wears winged sandals and holds a caduceus wand. |
