| 説明 | Carcanet have issued Tom Pickard's Collected Poems and Songs under the intriguing title: hoyoot (lower case and italicized). "hoyoot" is I believe a north-eastern slang, possibly a greeting, its meaning was explained to me but my memory has let me down! He is the inspiration behind "The Ballad of Jamie Allen" a folk opera though he describes that label as being too classical for the folk world and too folky for the classical world... He has done a marvelous amount of researching into the life of this long forgotten rogue, horse dealer, serial army deserter and highly accomplished musician, he describes it as an ongoing project. Jamie Allen died in Durham goal where he had been incarcerated for horse-theft and this account for Tom's inscription on my copy of his book signed: "Tom Pickard, in Durham, Jamie Allan's last resting place" Tom's story of Jamie Allan's life and adventures reads like a screen play, I hope he makes it. He is signing following his reading in the Palace Green Library at the Durham Book Festival. |
