Basal leaves form a rosette, and are sessile, oblanceolate and mostly 10–15 cm long, with conspicuous midribs and bases often attenuate. Cauline leaves are sessile, lanceolate and 3–8.5 cm long, with margins shallowly toothed. Flowers occur in the upper bract-like leaf axils. Hypanthiums are 2–4.5 cm long. Sepals are to 1.5 cm long. Petals are 1.5–3 cm long, yellow, sometimes red at the base, and becoming reddish with age. Fruit are cylindrical, broader in the upper part, 3–4 cm long and sparsely villous. Flowering can be year-round. A native of South America, it is often cultivated and found in disturbed areas such as roadsides. |
