説明York. It was the first inland town of WA founded in 1831. But remember the total population of WA at that time was very low. It has a number of well-preserved buildings which you can walk to look at in the early evening or early morning. York was named after the city in England. The early farmers grew wheat and grazed sheep. The first settlers included Reverend Wittenoom. The town emerged from 1835 onwards when the first army barracks were built in the town and land was cleared for cereal cropping. The railway from Perth reached York in 1886 shortly before its extension to Albany. It was during the gold rush boom of the 1890s that many of York’s current 80 historic buildings were erected. We are staying at the Castle Hotel Motel at 85 Avon Tce. Walk along Avon Terrace (the Main Street) with side detours at the southern end. Along Broome Street to the left when facing north is the old flourmill (1870 to 1960) complex at the start of the park. Move along Avon Tce. On the left at 73 Avon Tce is the Salvation Army Church; almost next door is the iconic York Town Hall( 1911) and the tourist information centre on the corner of Avon and South Street. Next on the left on the corner of Joaquina Street is the Imperial Hotel (dates from 1880). Along Joaquina Street to the left is the York Masonic Hall built 1887.Continue along Avon Tce and take South St. to the left and one block along it is St. Patrick’s Gothic Catholic Church with an outstanding tower, built in 1887.The hall as the original 1860 church. The Presbytery next door was built in 1894. Return to Avon Tce. At 87 Avon Tce is a fine old two-storey house and shop. Note the quaint pharmacy shop on the left corner. Across the Street on the left is the fine Castle Hotel where we are staying. It dates from 1853 and is the oldest inland hotel in WAOn the right hand corner is an old shop, probably a butchers shop built in 1908. As you walk along Avon Tce it is lined with fine old commercial shops and buildings most in good repair. Look at some of the fine pediments hiding the rooflines. On the right at 122-130 Avon Tce you will see the wonderful original stone Court House probably built by convicts in 1858; the Police Station built next door with the large central arched doorway was built in 1895 to complement the earlier Court House. A small jail was built at the rear. It was opened by Premier Sir John Forrest. Next door on the right is the York Post Office built in a similar style, in 1893, to service telegraph services to the Kalgoorlie goldfields. The next intersection is McCartney Street. There is a fine classical style 1880s bank building on the left hand corner. Continue along Avon Tce. A short way along on the left is the quaint Fire Station at 151 Avon Tce. It was built in 1897 as the first Council Chambers. When the new Town Hall was opened in 1911 this building became the fire station. On the right hand side of the street is a fine bank and manager’s residence from the 1890s, now used as offices. Ignore Harvey Street on the left. At the next intersection turn left into Pool Street. On the diagonal right corner are the Church of Christ buildings. Walk left along Pool Street, carefully cross the railway line. At 66 Pool Street is the Methodist Church, now the Uniting Church. It was built in 1888 replacing an even earlier Methodist church constructed in 1854. Turn right into Grey Street and at 25 Grey you will see the grandest historic house in York, Faversham’s. The original part of this house was built in 1840 but it was added to in the 1880s to make it into a truly grand place. It is now an upmarket B & B establishment. Retrace your steps along Brook Street past the Uniting Church, cross Avon Tce and use the footbridge across the Avon River. On the other side, still in Pool Street is the historic Anglican Church. Holy Trinity Anglican was completed in 1854, consecrated in 1858 and enlarged 1893. Return to the Castle Hotel. If you want to see two other historic buildings walk to the southern end of Avon Tce. Then turn left into Balladong Street. Cross the Avon River. Take the first to the right which is Clifford Street and then turn right into Brook Street to see the old York Hospital erected 1896 and the Residency built in the 1840s.
