説明 | Fusulinid limestone from the Pennsylvanian of Kansas, USA. (13.7 centimeters across at its widest)This is one of the most amazing fossiliferous limestones I've ever seen. The surface shown here is a monospecific concentration of fusulinid foraminifera ("forams"). Fusulinids are an extinct group of unicellular, marine benthic organisms (Protista, Granuloreticulosa, Foraminifera, Fusulinina). They had large, elongated, rice-like, microgranular, calcareous skeletons (tests). Fusulinids were widespread in Late Paleozoic shallow epicontinental seas. The other (non-photogenic) side of this limestone is also covered with numerous fusulinids, plus a small section of crinoid steam, a Euphemites bellerophontid mollusc, and a Knightites bellerophonitd mollusc.Stratigraphy: Raytown Member, Iola Formation, Kansas City Group, Missourian Series, lower Upper PennsylvanianLocality: Elk County, southeastern Kansas, USA |
