説明Albany. This part of Australia was officially claimed for Britain in 1791 when Commander George Vancouver sighted and named King George Sound and Princess Royal Harbour. The French navigator Nicholas Baudin explored the area in 1803. By the early 1820s whalers were making temporary camps around King George Sound. Frenchman Dumont D’Urville visited the area in 1826. Later that year fearing that the French might make a settlement there Governor Darling of NSW sent a troop of soldiers to King George Sound to make camp. Twenty-three convicts, 18 soldiers, a doctor and storeskeeper were sent to found a camp. They arrived in the brig named Amity on Christmas Day 1826. The tiny settlement struggled and had several commanders including Collett Barker from 1829-31. But once the Swan River Colony was proclaimed in 1829 the control of the King George Sound settlement was transferred from NSW to Governor Stirling in Perth. Strawberry Hill farm was soon established in 1827 as a government farm to provide food for the convicts and soldiers. The town site of Albany was surveyed in 1831 and Governor Stirling chose the town name of Albany in 1832. One early settler Patrick Thomas built a wattle and daub cottage in 1832. It is now on the Albany Walk listed below. It is the oldest extant cottage in WA. Farmers were slow to arrive and settle but by the 1840s Albany was the busiest port in the colony. Perth was never the main area of population in early WA. The oldest church in WA was erected here between 1841 and 1848 – St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church. Right from the start Albany had whalers among its settlers. Like other towns in WA Albany grew and infrastructure was built after transportation of convicts began in 1850. A convict built station for the hiring out of convicts as assigned men to farmers was erected in 1852. In 1872 it became the town gaol. Convicts were used to build the Albany to Perth road from 1853. A municipal Council for Albany was established in 1871 and a granite Town Hall built in 1888. With the opening of the railway from Perth in 1889 the city grew and expanded.
