The first stone building on the site was constructed throughout the twelfth century. From this period remain the chapter house and the Great Gatehouse, which represent two good examples of Norman architecture.Under the rule of Abbot David (1216-1234) held a new phase of construction, which highlights the chapel, built in 1220, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, called Elder Lady Chapel, adjacent to the northern part of choir, its architect, was believed to Adam Lock, master mason of the cathedral of Wells.Between 1298 and 1332, being abbot, Edward Knowke, the eastern part of the church was rebuilt in Gothic style decorated English. Thereafter the works were halted over a hundred years, ending around the middle of the fifteenth century, the transept and central tower. The reconstruction of the nave was incomplete at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries called.
