説明 | The Benjamin C. Grenup Memorial at Glenwood Cemetery in Washington, D.C., in the United States.Benjamin Grenup (also spelled "Greenup") was a firefighter who was part of District of Columbia Fire Company #1, now known as DCFD Engine Company #3. He killed in action in Washington, D.C., on May 6, 1856, when the hand engine he was pulling ran him over en route to a call at Shreeve's Stable on 7th Street NW.For 150 years, Greenup was believed to be the first D.C. firefighter to die in the line of duty. Soon after his death, Fire Company #1 commissioned a major memorial from sculptor Charles Rousseau. After its erection, rookie firefighters drove a fire engine every year onto the grounds of Glenwood Cemetery to honor Grenup's memory. But in 2011, researchers discovered that D.C. firefighter John G. Anderson died in the line of duty on March 11, 1856— -- wo months before Grenup. |
