説明 | The bridge is over 200 years old and despite its proximity to the busy road south to Windermere it retains an atmosphere of imperturbable calmness more in tune with its long past than with modernity. Otters hang-out below its single graceful arch while the bridge itself carries the old carriage road up to Greta Bank, originally the home of William Calvert. Calvert was a fellow-pupil of young William Wordsworth at Hawkshead School, his son Raisley died tragically young bequeathing a small fortune (£900) to his father's old school-chum. Thus the Calvert family generosity was instrumental in establishing the Wordsworth's in the Lake District. |
