説明 | Terang.White settlement began here in 1840 on the shores of Lake Terang when an employee of Niel Black erected a wooden shanty. The town followed much later in 1858 after surveying was completed. A store was the first structure but other public buildings soon followed in 1859 including a hotel, an unofficial post office and a carpenter’s shop. A wooden hall was opened in 1862 as was the first Post Office, an essential service above all else in the 1860s.The racecourse and a second hotel were built in the early 1860s. The present impressive Post Office was constructed in 1902 and a public subscription raised funds for a clock and tower to be added in 1904. The first stone school was built here in 1872 after funds were raised by public subscription. The town grew substantially in the 1880s and the decades after as closer settlement and dairying increased the surrounding population from about 1900 onwards. The railway from Camperdown and Geelong reached Terang in 1887. The impressive buildings to see in the town today include: the brick Courthouse erected 1904; the 20-metre high War Memorial obelisk 1923; the former Catholic Church 1900, Presbytery and Covent of Mercy 1910; and the Thomson Memorial Presbyterian Church 1894. But Terang has another speciality as it is the National Trust’s first Heritage Tree Town in Victoria. Although London Plane trees might dominate the streets, the plantations in the main street are mainly English oaks and elms, but there are also trees from more exotic places-Turkey oaks from Turkey, Sitka Spruce from Alaska, Italian Cypress near the cemetery and American Pecan trees near the swimming pool etc. |
