説明 | The Auld Brig is in the foreground. When the original New Brig was built in 1788, Robert Burns was not impressed. He believed it wouldn't last and so wrote a poem in which the two bridges had a conversation. At one point the Auld Brig says:Conceited gowk! puff'd up wi' windy pride! This mony a year I've stood the flood an' tide; And tho' wi' crazy eild I'm sair forfairn,I'll be a brig when ye're a shapeless cairn! The approximate meanings of some of the words follow:Gowk – cuckooMony – manyCrazy – crazed or infirmEild – old, antiquated, past sell-by dateSair – sore, distressed, grievedForfain – exhausted, played-out, worn-out, wearyCairn – heap of stonesAny translation loses much of the sense but here's an attempt:Conceited cuckoo! puffed up with windy pride! This many a year I’ve stood the flood and tide; And though with infirm old age I'm sore and weary,I’ll be a bridge when you're a shapeless heap of stones!Sure enough, in the flood of 1877, the New Brig was reduced to a shapeless cairn! The Auld Brig survived and, until the new bridge was rebuilt a year later, was again the only bridge. It still survives, though it has now been pedestrianised. |
