説明 | Left is Emmanuel Episcopal, H H Richardson's masterpiece on Pittsburgh's North Side. Right is Emory United Methodist a few miles away in East Liberty. I contacted the architects of Emory - MacLachlan, Cornelius & Filoni. They tell me that Emmanuel was not an influence on the design of Emory. They said the congregation wanted a modern, inexpensive design. One of those strange coincidences. Incidently, this was Richardson's second design for Emmanuel Episcopal. The congregation rejected the first because they wanted something inexpensive. The first design for Emmanuel Episcopal was later recycled into Richardson's rather ugly Immanuel Baptist, Newton, MA. It was later refined into the rather beautiful Shadyside Presbyterian by Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge - Richardson's successors. |
