説明 | Here LiethThe Body of the Rev Mr CONYERS PLACE M.A. the youngestSon of an ancient & reputable Family in the county of York,who after he had been liberally educated at Trinity Collegein Cambridge was invited to the Mastership of the Grammar Schoolin Dorchester, which he governed many years with great Successand Applause till weary of the fatigue of it, he chose to resign it,he was endued with many excellent talents, both natural & acquired,a lively Wit, a sound Judgement, with solid & extensive Learning;he was eminently Studious, yet remarkably Facetious;attached to no party, nor addicted to any Cause, but that of Truth and Religion, in the defense of whose Doctrines, he wrote manylearned and ingenious Treatises; while he was esteemedby all worthy of the greatest Preferments, he lived contentwith the praise of deserving without enjoying any,but the small Rectory of Poxwell in this countywhich he held 2 years, & in the possession of which he diedthe 26th day of October in the 74th Year of his ageA.D. 1738Here lieth alsoThe faithfull partner of his Bed when living & of his grave nowdead, MARY the only child of the Rev Mr WILL'M GLISSON;she lived with him chearfully & hospitably in an uninterruptedCourse of love & Concord near 40 years in ye town of Dorchester;a pattern of Piety & a rare Example of all the domestick &conjugal Virtues as a Wife a Mother, & a Mistress of her Family;it was her principal Care to observe the Will andcontribute to the Ease, & Happiness of her Husband;she survived him near 3 years, but having lost with him ye chiefComfort of this life, she willingly exchanged it for the Hopeof a better on the 27th day of Iune, in the 58th year ofher age A.D. 1741They left behind them one Son, & one DaughterMARY married to Dr CONYERS MIDDLETON ofCambridge, & CONYERS the present Rector of this Parishwho in testimony of his Piety & Gratitude to his most worthyand indulgent Parents, erected this Piece of Marbleto their Memory A.D. 1742***"The word "facetious" did not have the overtone of waggish jocularity we now give it: it referred to witty, elegant, fluent humour - "polished and agreeable" in the OED's definition..."Article by Charles Nicholl on Shakespeare, in 'The Guardian' 12th July 2014. |
