説明 | This is a mating pair of either Great Yellow Mormon (Papilio lowii) or Great Mormon (Papilio memnon) at Franklin Park Conservatory's Blooms & Butterflies exhibit. The two species are nearly identical. In fact the scientific community is in a debate as to whether they are actually two different species or one. What you are also seeing here is sexual dimorphism at its finest! In both lowii and memnon, the female comes in multiple color morphs. In fact, that is how they got the common name Mormon. Somebody thought the multiple forms of females reminded them of the multiple wives tradition of the Mormon faith. Thanks to Chris Kline, the conservatory's butterfly specialist, for the details. |
