説明 | SAVANNAH, Ga. – The recently revitalized Savannah Harbor Dredged Material Containment Area (DMCA) 1N was impounded with water in June 2014. Here's a view of the area, also known as "Onslow Island" on July 8, 2014. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Georgia Department of Transportation, revitalized the area to save money on harbor maintenance and provide wildlife habitat. USACE photo by George Jumara. With the removal of many invasive species and the creation of a two-impoundment dewatering system, this newly-renovated, 130-acre tract provides more efficient maintenance of the federal navigation channel. Because of its proximity to shoals in the upper harbor shipping channel, dredged material can be more economically placed into the Onslow site rather than being pumped downstream to other DMCAs some 8 to 11 miles away. This will save taxpayers up to $5 million in routine harbor maintenance costs every two years. The site also creates vital wildlife habitat in the form of mud flats, shallow water, and deep water areas for a variety of waterbirds. |
