説明 | These images were drawn by French artist and writer Jacques Arago. He journeyed around the world on a voyage of discovery and scientific investigation aboard the ship Uranie, commanded by Louis de Freycinet. Toward the end of 1818, the Uranie anchored in Shark Bay. De Freycinet’s crew, including his stow-away wife Rose, spent several days exploring the inlets and coastal areas. They observed native fauna, including some of the shells pictured, and encountered the native Malgana people. The Uranie’s journey was one of several French expeditions along the west coast of Australia in the late 1700s and early 1800s. These journeys prompted the British Government to take a livelier interest in colonising the western part of the continent, for fear that the French should beat them to it. They left a legacy of French place names along the coast. Arago’s drawings of molluscs evoke the different textures of shells; some smooth and polished, others rough or spiky and gritty with sea sand.
