説明 | Plot of all known fossil individuals by stratigraphy and cranial capacity, showing humans and extinct groups thought to be closer to humans than to living apes. Note that the Upper Pleistocene and the Holocene are too short to label. (The latter is a barely visible line.) Data on the cranial capacity of fossil specimens is largely from one overview study, supplemented with other reports. “Chimpanzee Range” is based on the measurements of several specimens and may not show the full range (although it is probably close). “Living Human Range” shows the cranial capacity range for 90% of extant humans. Data on specimens and stratigraphy is from an ongoing, comprehensive review by the author. References are too numerous to list here, but the annotated data can be viewed online at:github.com/keesey/humanevolfigs/blob/master/src/data/comp...Note that some Upper Pleistocene individuals (both human and Neandertal) had cranial capacities higher than would be normal today. This is quite possible due to the lower temperatures in the “ice age”—even today, higher cranial capacity is associated to some extent with colder climates, probably because large brains retain heat more effectively.References to be added later. |
