説明Jondaryan station of about 400,000 acres was established in 1842. It was converted from leasehold to freehold land and became QLD’s largest freehold property. The freehold property at its peak was around 300,000 acres. When the railway from Toowoomba came through in 1867 the town of Jondaryan emerged but it was Oakey that grew into the region’s major settlement. A school opened in Jondaryan in 1872 and commercial establishments followed including 4 hotels, Post Office, general stores, churches etc. In the 1890s when adjoining pastoral estates like Cecil Plains were broken up for closer settlement Jondaryan station survived intact until 1908 when Jondaryan was subdivided for selector farmers. The last parts of Jondaryan were sold off by the government in the late 1940s. Jondaryan became a district of small dairy farmers rather than huge sheep runs. But meantime Jondaryan station operated like the big pastoral estates in SA with its own station store, blacksmith, workers cottages, chapel etc. Jondaryan was huge so it required a huge shearing shed. It catered for 52 shearers simultaneously capable of shearing more than 3,000 sheep a day when the property stock count was around 300,000 sheep. The shed was built between 1859 and 1861 and it is the largest woolshed in Australia.
