説明 | PORTSMOUTH, Va. (June 17, 2014) – Construction of approximately 4,100 linear feet of shoreline protection along the western shore of Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area, or CIDMMA, is progressing smoothly as Corps contractor Coastal Design and Construction, Inc. completes construction of 11 riprap breakwaters to replace the existing (randomly placed) concrete rubble. The concrete rubble, remnants of the old James River Bridge, did not provide adequate means of shoreline protection. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District, is managing the project, which includes creating vegetated wetlands behind the breakwaters for habitat and added shoreline protection. Coastal Design and Construction, Inc., based in Gloucester, Va., is an 8a small business company. The shoreline protection project is funded through a combination of Corps Operations and Maintenance and Sandy Flood Control and Coastal Emergency Funds.CIDMMA is a 2,500-acre artificial confined dredged material disposal site. Plans for the site were developed in the early 1940s to provide a long-term disposal area for material dredged from the channels and ports in the Hampton Roads area. Hampton Roads, including the ports of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Newport News, and Hampton, comprises Virginia’s largest port complex.CIDMMA was recommended and approved by Congress under the River and Harbor Act of 1946. Actual construction of Craney Island was completed in 1957. Since that time, this site has received maintenance, private and permit-dredged material from numerous dredging projects in the Hampton Roads area. (U.S. Army photo/Gerald Rogers) |
