説明 | A wide canal boat entering Tuel Lane Tunnel, in Sowerby Bridge. Opened in 1996 to form part of the final missing link to re-open the Rochdale Canal in its entirity. The tunnel was necessary as the diversion of Tuel Lane to meet Wharf Street used the alignment of the old canal before it was closed. At the other end of the tunnel is Tuel Lane Lock, the deepest lock in the United Kingdom. It is staffed by a volunteer lockeeper and boats need to request permission in advance to pass through. This was the first time I’d seen a boat pass through the tunnel in the 3 1/2 years that I’ve been living in Sowerby Bridge. Alas I didn’t have my SLR with me at the time so this shot with my iPhone will have to do.An Optare Solo bus, operated by Yorkshire Tiger (formerly Centrebus), on the number 577 route, passes over the tunnel. |
