| 説明 | The Muirtown swing bridge which carries the A862 Inverness-Beauly road (which until 1982 was the A9 Great North Road) over the Caledonian Canal at Muirtown, Inverness. The bridge was manually operated until the current structure was installed in 1935 (built by Sir William Arrol & Co, Glasgow). It is now electrically operated.Originally way out in the countryide when the Canal was opened in 1822, this location is now well within the City Limits of Inverness, and the bridge (one of only two road bridges over the Canal north of Loch Ness) causes major traffic congestion when opened for water-borne traffic. It is at the foot of the 4-lock system at Muirtown. No soon had I arrived than it was closed to road trafic, the bridge opened and then immediately closed again with not a moving vessel in sight. One can only presume that this was a daily test? |
