説明 fine example of a Greek Revival pre Civil War house dominated by grand columns and verandas. Milledgeville. This small city of about 20,000 people was once the capital of Georgia. The site for the town was selected in 1803 as a central spot in Georgia for the state capital. It was named after John Milledge who was Governor of Georgia in 1804. It remained the capital of Georgia throughout the Civil War to 1868 when the capital was moved to Atlanta. It was laid out as a capital with a grid pattern around four public squares. Part of the new state house in Gothic style was opened in 1807. Wealthy and powerful people were attracted to the new capital and cotton was the main plantation crop of the region. It was shipped downstream to the coast. Fine houses were built and Oglethorpe University opened in 1838. Sidney Lanier attended university here in 1858. In the Antebellum era half the people of Milledgeville were black slaves. In 1839 the Greek Revival style Governor’s Mansion was occupied for the first time. In January 1861 the Congressmen met in the State Capitol and passed the secession ordinance and Georgia joined the Confederacy. In November 1864 General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived here on his March to the Sea with 30,000 Union troops. The town surrendered peacefully and escaped being burnt. But the Union troops did burn the arsenal, the courthouse, the prison and the bridge across the Oconee River. The Antebellum houses were left untouched. In one final act of vandalism the Union troops poured honey down the pipes of the organ of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church (1843)! There are more than twenty nationally important historic structures in Milledgeville. Several old buildings are open for tours or are museums including the Old State Capitol, the Old Governor’s Mansion, Lockerly Hall etc. Its historic centre is delightful for walking around. A specialty of the city is fried green tomatoes and the Whistle Stop café from the movie of that name is just 30 miles away.
