説明 | This figure of an ox, with a very round pudding within, hangs on a wall alongside the old road from London to Harwich, where it passes through Manningtree. Sculpted by Colin Wilkin, it illustrates a quotation from Shakespeare's play 'Henry IV. Part One', wherein Prince Hal ( later to be Henry V) teases his companion, Falstaff, in a scene set in the Boar's Head Tavern, Eastcheap. In this scene the prince pretends to be his father and Falstaff takes the role of the prince, which gives Hal ample opportunity to make jokes at his companion's expense. He thus remarks, 'There is a devil haunts thee in the likeness of an old fat man ... that huge bombard of sack, that stuffed cloak-bag of guts, that roasted Manningtree ox with a pudding in his belly'. It is thought to be a reference to the annual Manningtree Fair of medieval times, when a whole ox would be roasted as part of the festivities. |
