説明 | I was intrigued to find at a postcard fair in 1994 two postcards sent from remote parts of pre-Trianon Hungary to one of the Marriage family in Broomfield.(by SPM, Sampson P Marriage, (1880-1971), son of Sampson Marriage, farmer miller and coal merchant (1842-1915)) to his 23 year old sister Helen back home at the family farm in Broomfield. I subsequently tracked down cards sent by four other members of the party. Not all of the group were from Essex, but many were. They were entertained as honoured guests of the Hungarian Government, and travelled throughout the country - present day Hungary Serbia ,Romania and Slovakia - by private train, taking over two weeks in the latter part of May and early June 1902 to visit farms, vineyards, studs slaughterhouses etc. plus some sightseeing. A handsomely illustrated book was published to commemorate the visit. I was fascinated to see they visited a now almost non-existent village in present day SW Romania called Bazias. Before the treaty of Trianon, it was an important port on the Danube for export of coal and for tourism through the Iron Gate and past Trajan's plaque to Orsova. The railway from Resita to Bazias was the first built in present day Romania. The postcard posted in Bazias on Monday morning arrived in Chelmsford on Wednesday evening at 10pm, for delivery on Thursday.morning. The massive railway station and hotel were demolished and Bazias reverted to being a sleepy village tucked away right on the Serbian border in a dead end corner of Romania close to the Danube gorge.I imagine Mr Marriage wrote the postcard sitting outside in the garden of the Station restaurant...waiting for a trip down to Orsovawww.flickr.com/photos/28179929@N08/Frederic [sic] Marriage was farming here in 1901 with Margaret Marriage nee Wood [they had 13 children] , but he died in 1906 aged 71. his wife died in 1925 aged 88Sampson Percival Marriage married Dorothy H Newman in 1913, their son Sampson D Marriage was born n 1917. Sampson P died in 1971 aged 91; |
