説明The J-6 family, was the next step up from the the Wright J-5 (R-790) family. A 233 hp J-5-9 powered "The Spirit Of St. Louis" on its 1927 flight across the Atlantic. The J-6s were introduced in 1928, with the same 5.5 inch stroke as the J-5s and cylinder diameter increased from 4,5 to 5.0 inches. J-6 engines also had gear-driven superchargers, stepped up 7.8:1 from the engine's maximum 2000 rpm, to maintain sea-level intake air pressure at altitude, and were made in 5, 7 and 9 cylinder versions. The 9 cylinder produced 300 hp initially, with 73 octane (!) gasoline, and a 5.1:1 compression ratio. Improved cylinder heads produced 330 hp, 10% more power. Another 10%, 365hp, was produced in the R-975E, with compression ratio increased to 6.1:1 and maximum RPM up to 2100. The E-3 had 6.3:1 compression, a 10.15:1 supercharger gear ratio and 2200 rpm maximum (2250 for takeoff), required 80 octane, and produced 420 hp.Continental's R-9 version allowed 2300rpm, 2350 for takeoff, and produced 500hp, 525 for takeoff, using 91 octane fuel. Beech used the Continental model in the B-18C/C-45 twin engined transport, but their biggest market, dwarfing all airplane uses, was in armored vehicles. M3 Grant/Lee, M4 and M4A1 Sherman, M7 Priest, M12 motor gun carriage, M18 Hellcat tank destroyer, M40 motor gun carriage, the Canadian Ram and Sexton gun carriage were among the applications, and a Diesel was developed but not built in quantity. The R-975 was built by Continental under license into the 1950s. This is the same type of engine as is installed in the Curtiss-Wright model Travel Air B-14-B "Speedwing", NC12332, to the left.Intended for the wealthy 'sportsman', this Speedwing is one of two built, and was owned by the then-President of the Curtiss-Wright Aeroplane Company.
