説明 | The preserved "HMS Trincomalee". She was launched in 1817 as a "Leda" Class 38-gun, 18 pdr Fifth Rate Frigate (1,063 tons burthen); she was designed by Sir John Henslow and built at Bombay of teak, which proved almost impervious to wear or decomposition. The "Leda" Class was the standard RN frigate of the Napoleonic Wars and afterwards, 47 being launched 1800-1830 (plus two cancelled whilst building in 1831). "HMS Trincomalee" was reclassified as a 42-gun frigate in 1839 and converted to a 26-gun, 32 pdr Sixth Rate Corvette in 1845-47, then to a 16-gun training ship in 1861 and was renamed "HMS Foudroyant" in 1903, eventually being moored at Portsmouth. In 1987 she was towed to West Hartlepool and restored to original condition and name, where she is pictured at Hartlepool Historic Quay, 01/01. Scanned photograph taken with a Canon AE-1 Program. |
