Goodman Newton, well known in and about Burlingame, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Martin Myers, near Wilmington, on Tuesday, Jan. 30, after a short illness. Mr. Newton was a stone mason and plasterer by trade, and had lived in this vicinity for the last twenty-five years. Funeral services were held at the daughter’s home at ten o’clock yesterday morning and burial was made in Burlingame cemetery. Goodman Newton, son of Knute and Bertha Newton, was born in Norway on Nov. 27, 1841, aged at the time of his death seventy-five years. When a boy of but eleven years he came to America, locating in Illinois. He enlisted in the 53rd Ill. Inf. and served until the close of the war. His marriage to Susan Farley occurred at Ottawa, Ill., April 9, 1867. Soon afterward they moved to Kansas and homesteaded a farm in Lincoln county. In 1894 they came to Lyon county, since which time he lived in this locality. Of eight children born seven survive, all being present for the funeral service: Emerson of Colorado, Thomas, Edward, Robert and Mrs. Martin Myers of this locality, Fred of Lyon county and Mrs. O. M. Olson of Lincoln Center. The deceased was a member of E.P. Sheldon Post G. A. R. and was buried with honors due a soldier.
