説明 | Railton and Devonport- Home Hill. This unremarkable town which produces cement is known as topiary town. Years ago its residents decided to feature topiary in their gardens making it a unique town of interest to gardeners. From here we detour via Latrobe, another historic place to the outskirts of Devonport where we visit Home Hill run by the National Trust. Home Hill was built by Joseph and Enid Lyons in 1916. It was their home until they died. Jo was born in Stanley in 1879, trained as a teacher with the first teachers college entrants in Tasmania 1907 and became a Labor MP in 1914.He was next Minister for Education. The 35 year old Jo met a 17 year old trainee teacher whilst inspecting a school and shortly after he and married her! In 1923 he became Premier of Tasmania, and was elected to the federal parliament in 1929. From 1930 Jo Lyons was Australian treasurer for the ALP during the Great Depression. He argued with the ALP over economic policy and eventually formed his own party- which merged with the United Australia Party (forerunner of the Liberal Party.) Lyons was PM from 1932-1939 as leader of the UAP. He is the only person to have been both a state premier and Australian prime minister. He died of a heart attack in 1939. With his wife Edith he had 12 children (one became a future Premier of Tasmania). Dame Edith (she was knighted in 1936) returned from the Lodge to Home Hill in 1939. In 1943 she stood for federal parliament and became the first woman to enter federal parliament. In 1949 Menzies won power and Dame Edith became the first woman to hold a cabinet position- vice president of the Executive Committee. Dame Edith retired from politics in 1951 and lived at Home Hill until her death in 1981.The City of Devonport owns Home Hill, and the National Trust owns it contents. The house has a pretty garden. |
