説明Piedras cansadas, "tired stones", remain in the Incan Quarry. The quarry (Cachiccata in Quechua, Las Canteras in Spanish) was where the stones to build Ollantaytambo were hewn from landslide boulders and carted over 7pm downhill to the town and fort. Most stones were dozens or even hundreds of tons making the proposed dragging route extremely difficult. Now the obvious question is what is this wheel doing here. The Incas did not apparently have or use the wheel at any time. Yet this very large, very wheel-like circle remains standing in the quarry. One idea is that it was a late build after the Spanish had arrived and introduced new ideas (Ollaytaytambo appears to have been still being built or rebuilt when the Spanish attacked the final time from Cusco). Or perhaps it truly was something not a wheel and the hole in the centre not for an axle. Weird either way and archeological theories about the site are hard to come by. While mainstream archeology believes the quarry-and-drag theory to be standard, many mysteries abound as to how the quarry worked. Large-scale evidence of geoengineering to widen and flatten the rough walking trail down appears missing. My friend pointed out another big question: where are all the rock chips and bits left over from the shaping and cutting? Much might have be washed downhill or buried, but such an industrious site would surely leave traces archeologists could find in the layers. To my knowledge, such tests haven't been made.
