| 説明 | Mudgee. James Blackman was the first white explorer in the area. The first white settler here was William Lawson who crossed the Blue Mountains in 1813. He took up 6,000 acres along the river. He was immediately followed by George and Henry Cox, sons of William who built the first road over the Blue Mountains. The town site was established in 1838 and by 1841 the village had 3 hotels, 36 houses, some public buildings, and an Anglican Church. The gold rushes at Hill End, Gulgong and Hargraves all boosted the town. In 1861 it was declared a municipality. Many of the towns existing buildings were erected before 1865 including: the Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic and Anglican churches; the first school, police station, courthouse, post office, and mechanics institute. Four coach factories were operating by the 1860s. After the gold petered out the town survived as a service centre for a rich merino well district. Today it has wineries, honey and horticulture as well. The main industry is an abattoir. The population is around 8,200 people. The town is known for its galleries, antique shops and cafes. Some of the historic buildings in Mudgee include: the classical revival style Post Office (1862); the old Police Station (1860); Cudgegong Shire Council Offices (1885); old Court House (1861); former St Matthews Convent (1874); the Colonial Inn Museum( formerly a hotel, 1856); St Paul’s Presbyterian Church ( 1875); old Mechanics Institute (1861); the former Gothic Schoolhouse ( 1876); the Methodist Church (1863); St Mary’s Catholic Church ( parts from 1857); the Catholic presbytery ( the oldest standing building in Mudgee from 1851); the Anglican Church (1860); and the town library( formerly the Town Hall, 1880). Australian writer Henry Lawson grew up in the Mudgee district. His parents were married in the town and his experiences in the region became a major influence on his literary works and stories. He briefly attended the Catholic School in Mudgee. Gulgong, further out than Mudgee has a Henry Lawson Visitor Centre in it. The main park in Mudgee is the Lawson Park. |
