説明The 1891 and 1894 Shearers’ Strikes affected the local pastoralists who were in turn being affected by the collapse of funding banks. Police escorts were used by the pastoralists, and some violence ensued. It was out of this major clash of unionised workers and large company run stations that the Australia Labor Party was formed. It was the first labour political party in the world and it stemmed directly from the 1891 strike which was centered on Barcaldine. A shearer Tommy Ryan was elected to the Queensland Parliament after this and a new labour party was formed around this achievement. In 1894 the strike centre was near Winton and shearers burn down shearing sheds and armed themselves with rifles. One unionist was killed and around 40 shots were fired. In the end the shearers accepted a pay cut. Banjo Paterson later that year wrote a song about these strikes whilst visiting Dagworth Station. The first public performance of Waltzing Matilda took place in Winton in April 1895, but the headquarters of the Shearers’ Union was in Longreach. The Tree of Knowledge was given that name by the old Aboriginal men who used to discuss issues under the tree. The unionists and shearers met there too in 1891. In 2006 the tree was poisoned by some disgruntled person and the ancient old River Red Gum died. An artist was then commissioned to convert the old dead trunk into an artistic wooden tree which is amazing. The wooden cover on the outside protects this work of art. You can see photos of the wooden art tree in my album Longreach Rail Trip. The Spirit of the Outback Train Journey. The trip covers approximately 1,350 kms- Roma Street to Rockhampton is approx 650 kms; and Rockhampton to Longreach is approx 700 kms. The Spirit of the Outback used to be called the Midlander and travelled only from Rockhampton to Longreach and on to Winton. The railway line from Brisbane to Longreach opened section by section. The first section was opened between Maryborough and Gympie in 1882. Next came the section from Maryborough to Bundaberg in 1888, and then the leg from Bundaberg to Brisbane in 1891. Following this came a section from Bundaberg to Gladstone in 1897- a coastal steamer service then carried passengers up to Cairns. This still left the 110 km section from Gladstone to Rockhampton not completed. This final section of the coast railway was completed in 1903 finally linking Brisbane with Rockhampton.Meanwhile a long section from Rockhampton to Barcaldine was opened in 1886. The final section from Barcaldine to Longreach was opened in 1892 linking Longreach and Rockhampton 11 years before the Brisbane-Rockhampton connection was made. The track crosses the Great Australian Dividing Range. We begin at 26 feet (8 metres) above sea level at Rockhampton and go up us follows:Emerald at 589 feet (180 metres);Bogantungan at 1103 feet (336 metres);Hannan’s Gap – highest point, at 1718 feet (523 metres);Drummond at1469 feet (448 metres);Alpha at 1152 feet (351 metres); Barcaldine at 877 feet (267 metres);Longreach at 620 feet (190 metres). Bogantungan to Hannan’s Gap is 12.8 km so this means a rise of 14.6 metres for every kilometre. For comparison Peterborough railway station in the mid north of SA , is 1750 feet (532 metres )above sea level.
