説明Billed at the time as New Zealand’s greatest film production, 'The Te Kooti Trail' premiered at the Strand Theatre, Auckland on 17 November 1927. The film was based on the military campaign of Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki, and adapted from various historical sources. Its pioneering producer Rudall Hayward used local Māori in his cast, and gave the starring role to elderly Tūhoe chief Te Pairi o te Rangi (who had carried rifles for Te Kooti as a boy). Restored in 2000 by The Film Archive, 'The Te Kooti Trail' was re-screened at Le Giornate del Cinema Muto, Italy in 2001.'The Te Kooti Trail' became notorious for causing one of New Zealand’s first home-grown censorship controversies. The release of the film was delayed by censor William Tanner (at the request of MP Maui Pomare), so that Māori MPs and elders of the Ringatu Church could ensure its accuracy. "Some have argued that Hayward then used the incident to win publicity for the film," notes NZ On Screen, "but it appears more likely that the fuss was created by Whakatane Films, the company that financed it." As a result, the famous by-line 'Stopped by the N.Z. Film Censor! Because of its Amazing Historic Realism – then released because it proved to be the truth. Filmed as it actually happened!' was added. The record above is the memorandum instructing Tanner to censor the film. Fearing that the 'The Te Kooti Trail' might be sent offshore before he had a chace to view it, Tanner recommended the Customs and Post Office be given powers to intercept the film. However there was no need - Haywood submitted the film to Tanner on 6 November, and the film went ahead after the removal of two subtitles referring to Te Kooti’s "fake miracles."Archives Reference: IA1 Box 1316/ 13/11/135collections.archives.govt.nz/web/arena/search#/?q=R12329473For updates on our On This Day series and news from Archives New Zealand, follow us on Twitter twitter.com/ArchivesNZMaterial from Archives New Zealand
