説明 | Summertown. Half way between Uraidla and Summertown we will see on the left the old 1909 Summertown Police Station. This fine brick and stone gable ended building has been a private residence for many years. It is opposite the Summertown cemetery and oval. Summertown was named by early settlers as suitable for summer living because of the cooler temperatures. Prior to this name being adopted in 1874 the area was simply referred to as Mt Lofty. Settlement began with tree felling and timber cutting so that fruit orchards and vegetables could be grown. The most prominent early district families were the Sitters, the Percivals, the Squiers and the Trenordans. In the early days the settlement of Summertown along the main road had three blacksmiths, several timber logging works, stores and a hotel. The first major building in the district was the Mt Lofty Hotel erected in 1855 and licensed from that time before the town was created. Henry James was the first publican who built a one room wide two storey hotel. Behind the hotel stone walls and fine stables and a hay loft still exist. In 1884 an upper floor was added with a classical style balustrade along the roof line. A new wing along Greenhill Road was added and the whole façade was unified with classical features and good symmetry. The Australian style cantilever veranda with fine wrought iron lacework was not part of the usual classical style but it worked well. Note on Greenhill Road that two of the 1884 French doors on the former balcony have been replaced with windows as shown by the cement work beneath the windows instead of stone. At one stage the hotel became a temperance hotel before being licensed again. Then in 1914 the license was transferred to the Bridgeport Hotel in Murray Bridge and the Mt Lofty Hotel never re-opened. It has been a fine residence ever since.Other notable buildings in Summertown include the former Wesleyan Methodist church built next door to the Institute in 1880 on land donated by Mr Squiers. It has been partly demolished for many years. The remaining part is now part of a residence. The old Institute which looks like a church itself was opened in 1884 on land donated by Mr Squiers. The Bible Christian Methodists also erected a church in Summertown. The Mount Tabor Bible Christian Church opened in 1881 on land donated by Mr Sitter. A Sunday school hall was added in 1924 after the Methodist churches amalgamation in 1900 and a new church hall and porch were added in 1964. This church still operates. The original Greenhill Road from the Mt Lofty district to Adelaide was exceedingly steep and failed to take account of the steep contours. George Sitter, a local pioneer was an amateur surveyor and quickly suggested an alternative road with milder gradients which was suitable for horses and carts. His plan was accepted by the local residents and then the Main Roads Department. A bridge on the Greenhill Road was named the Sitters Bridge and a street by Greenhill Road at Burnside is still known as Sitters Memorial Drive. |
