説明 | Wet, mortar, litter, almanacs:bitter remains. There's that strangesense of trespass - of eavesdroppingon the displaced. It's a strain, listening in on the long-gone.Bottles, broken glass, damp beds -the mattress-stuffing pluckedby birds, the air ack-ackingwith the frack of past hangovers, anecdotes and strafings -dirty paper, knife, crucifixstripped of varnish, tarnishedspoons, woodshavings with crustsof mould, beautiful concretionsof verdigris on smashed lamps, statuette, old chairs, hairsstill stuck to antimacassars:a scattering of relics. Outcomes the notebook bound incalfskin. I etch in dereliction.Poem by Giles Watson, 2013. The first line of each stanza is derived from the war-diary of Edward Thomas, 23rd February 1917: "Sordid ruin of Estaminet with carpenter's shop over it in Rue Jeanne d'Arc - wet, mortar, litter, almanacs, bottles, broken glass, damp beds, dirty paper, knife, crucifix, statuette, old chairs." |
