説明 | This is a view of my 20xT₄ toroid from an axis of five-fold symmetry. Like a dodecahedron, any tetrahedral symmetry toroid will have six such axes.Though it may appear complex, I found this to be a medium project overall in terms of absolute effort. The polyhedron consists of 20 truncated cubes each having 36 edges, less 30 sets of 3 shared yellow units, giving a total count of 720 - 90 = 630 units. I've certainly had bigger projects to deal with! But that being said, this took an incredibly long time to make, and in the end I was quite happy to be rid of it.Every Double-Sided Hexagonal Ring Solid Unit, be it concave or convex, consists of a half-sheet of 15x15 cm² origami paper. But my fingers aren't very nimble, and I found that subdividing these halves into fourths again as I usually do resulted in units that were too small to be easily assembled. With that in mind, I reluctantly proceeded to use the original unit size, and as a consequence this project takes up a lot more physical space than most of my projects whose unit counts are within the same order of magnitude.Weight was an issue. Scrunching was an issue. Sagging due to not being propped up during assembly was an issue. And more times than I care to recall, I had to fiddle about, reaching inside the structure in order to fully insert tabs into their pockets. But the worst part was having to tote this thing around. True, it wasn't heavy, but it was (and is) fragile, and beyond a certain point it was too large to conveniently lay on any desk or shelf. Oftentimes I found myself leaving the toroid in my car rather than taking it back to my table on any day when I was not going to work on it. If you have a keen eye, you may be able to notice the color bleaching on certain units due to direct sunlight exposure. (It was more prominent on the yellow units.)I've learned my lesson. Big origami projects stay in the trunk from now on! |
