| 説明 | Tuliptop Gardens.This wonderful 10 acre garden of tulips and other spring flowers and beautiful colourful trees is a delightful spot. It is known for its spring blossom trees. It is a private garden that only opens during the Floriade season. Your admission fee includes tea and instant coffee and a sausage sandwich at lunch time. The owners open their garden in support of a foster care charity for children. They also operate a nursery on site. The garden is 15 kms from Canberra city centre and just outside the ACT in NSW near the village of Sutton. The boundaries of the ACT are close to Canberra city. But did you also know that the ACT also had land at Jervis Bay, but not any longer? The ACT was created in 1911 but the Jervis Bay Territory Act was passed a few years later in 1915 to add a coastal strip to the Australian Capital Territory. It was thought the new capital might need a port and it might need access to the coast for a naval base. No port was ever needed for Canberra but a naval base was established there and still exists. In fact almost all of the 400 residents of the Jervis Bay Territory work for the navy as civilians or enlistees. The ACT used to include Jervis Bay but this is no longer the case. When the ACT got self government in 1989 the Jervis Bay Territory became a separate territory, still administered by the federal government, but it is not as part of the ACT. Back to the ACT- around 1,000 people live in the ACT but not in Canberra city. They are the leaseholders of rural properties. There is still some dairying and sheep grazing in the ACT as well as the heavily forested Tidbinbilla Range of Mountains with parts planted in Pinus radiata. It is in this area that the Mount Stromlo Observatory operates. In national politics the ACT has two House of Representative seats and two Senate seats in our federal parliament. |
