説明 | CLARKS HILL, S.C. –Nearly 200 volunteers participated in clean-up activities at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers J. Strom Thurmond Lake for the 20th Annual National Public Lands Day, Sept. 28, 2013. Volunteers picked up trash, worked on landscaping beds, and applied water sealant on picnic tables at the Modoc, Petersburg, and Ridge Road campgrounds. Volunteers included students from Georgia Southern University, who built about 30 fish attractors using orange piping and cinder blocks. Corps staff will submerge the fish attractors in the lake, where they will provide cover for fish. Volunteers also worked on improvements to equestrian campsites at the Bussey Point Campground. National Public Lands Day is a nationwide observance coordinated by the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation. The observance began in 1994 with the idea that millions of Americans who use federal, state, and local public lands each year could spend a day volunteering their time to the land and their country.
